The Coliseo of Puerto Rico has always been committed to the conservation of the environment. It is for this reason that by summer 2007 the Green Program Committee was formally created.
In September 2013, a contest was held among employees of all facilities of the Convention District Authority to design the new logo of the program. The logo chosen was created by our Senior Marketing Manager, Ms. Frances Meléndez.
In the new official logo of the committee, the leaf represents the green program and the footsteps represent the constant advance to achieve our commitment to the environment and Puerto Rico.
The program plan covers three areas:
- Recycling, which focuses on the management of waste that can be diverted from Puerto Rican landfills.
- Reduction and reuse of materials and
- ficiency of operations, in general terms, including energy management.
Currently, the goal of the committee and program is to convey the message to all visitors, so that they are part of the commitment of the Coliseo de Puerto Rico to the conservation of the environment.
As part of the goal of incorporating the public in the efforts of the Green Program, the following initiatives have been undertaken:
- A voice message was created, urging the public to participate in our recycling program, which is broadcast during the first hour of each event.
- Recycling stations were created, reusing litter bins to convert them into recycling bins, identifying them with the program message.
Coliseo participated in a "Blackout", which kept the building for an hour with its lights off, to encourage the reduction of energy consumption.
Among the products that are recycled in the Coliseo of Puerto Rico are: office paper, cardboard, aluminum, plastic, light bulbs, wooden pallets, cooking oil, etc.
The Coliseo has a total of 21 recycling stations, located in the three levels of the building, in which empty plastic bottles and glasses are deposited.
Each food concession and bar station has recycling bins where staff deposits the plastic and cans.
Utensils (glasses, plates, cutlery), used to serve the public's food and drink, are recyclable and some are biodegradable and can be used to make composites.
Approximately 12,000 cans of beer and 4,000 bottles of water and soft drinks are sold in one month. This represents a year of 144,000 aluminum cans and 48,000 plastic bottles that can be recycled in their entirety with the cooperation of the public.
We use eco-friendly cleaning products in our facilities.
The products we use in our bathrooms are made from recycled fiber materials.
The Coliseo of Puerto Rico has 14,000 bulbs distributed throughout the building, which are recyclable.
As part of efficient energy management, we have carried out small projects, such as the installation of motion sensors, and large projects, such as the installation of VFD (Frequency Variation Driver) system.
The Coliseo de Puerto Rico has a total of 29 VFD's which helps us to save energy and extends the life of the equipment.
