Convention District Authority

Convention Center District Authority - Government Administration

The Convention Center District is a public corporation created under Act No. 142 of October 4, 2001 (as amended by Act. 185 of August 3, 2004).

It provides for the development, administration and supervision of the institutions of the new District. These include a modern Convention Center, the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot, the Old Casino, Bahía Urbana, and the construction of offices, a commercial and residential area.

The District development is carried out through the joint efforts of government with private enterprise. The public sector established development parameters, carried out the planning of this new piece of the city, obtained the necessary permits and provided the necessary basic infrastructure for each project.

The Puerto Rico Convention District occupies about 154 acres in the heart of San Juan. It represents the transformation of the land occupied by the former naval base at Miramar in a new community with residential areas, offices, shopping and entertainment establishments and facilities for civic or cultural activities.

The mission of the Authority is to develop and operate the Convention District, the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, Convention Center, Old Casino, Bahía Urbana and other mixed-use projects to position Puerto Rico as a world-class destination for business, tourism, and entertainment, with the purpose of promoting economic development in the Island.

The vision is the robust and sustainable economic growth of Puerto Rico through convention industry, tourism, entertainment and urban redevelopment.

The objectives of the District Authority are:

  • Efficiently manage the operations of the Convention Center, Coliseo de Puerto Rico, Old Casino and Bahia Urbana and ensure that quality services are offered at those facilities.
  • Revitalize and maintain the Isla Grande area, developing the convention district, according to a development plan for mixed uses and keeping it in excellent conditions.
  • Encourage the creation of new jobs and business opportunity
  • Carry out the functions of the Authority in an agile and efficient way, using the principles of project management and acting as a facilitator in partnership with private enterprise.
